Successful Completion of Addis Ababa Section of Upgrading and Transformation Project of Medium- and Low-voltage Distribution Network of Ethiopia

        On March 15 of Ethiopian local time, the completion ceremony of the Addis Ababa Section of upgrading and transformation project of medium- and low-voltage distribution network of Ethiopia was successfully held, which is built by China Electrical Power Equipment and Technology Co., Ltd. (thereafter referred to CET) of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).
       The event was attended by Mr. Tan Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, HE. Dr. Frehiwot Woldehanna, Vice Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Ms. Liu Yu, Counselor of Chinese Economic & Commercial, and Spencer, the representative of World Bank. CET General Manager Yu Jun and UEAP CEO Shiferaw Telila delivered speeches on behalf of construction side and owner side respectively. 
       With a total investment of USD 60.58 million, the project of upgrading and transformation of Ethiopian medium- and low-voltage power distribution network was owned by UEAP, funded by World Bank and built by CET under the EPC model. It covers the upgrading and transformation of power distribution networks of 8 cities and towns and the construction of 7 SCADA centers. The project kicked off in February 2016 and the section of Addis Ababa was officially completed on March 15, 2019. It is an important project of Ethiopia to execute the plan of power access to all villages. After launch into operation, the project will improve the grid structures of the eight major cities of Ethiopia, reduce the power transmission loss of distribution networks, guarantee the power demand of local business operation and improve the stability of power supply to local residents, thus of great significance to the economy development of Ethiopia. 
       At the ceremony, Vice Minister Dr. Frehiwot Woldehanna recognized the great significance of the power distribution project that would guarantee reliable power supply to the residents and improve the local livelihood. Chinese Ambassador Tan Jian expressed the willingness of China to provide necessary assistance to Ethiopia in her industrialization and the best wish on deeper cooperation between China and Ethiopia. CEO Shiferaw Telila affirmed the importance of launched project in higher power supply reliability and better electrification level that the project would further advance the power modernization and help realize 100% power access coverage in the foreseeable future. The World Bank representative Spencer extended warm congratulation on the project completion and sang high praise to the efficient work of both owner and builder. 
       CET General Manager Yu Jun said in his speech on behalf of EPC side that CET always attaches the utmost importance to contract fulfillment and social responsibility and expressed sincere gratitude to the cooperation and support of the Ethiopian governments at all levels and the owner side. 
       All the event participants came to the project site in the city of Addis Ababa and witnessed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. They also visited the local residents’ families to understand the influence of power distribution network upgrading and transformation on local livelihood. According to the local residents, the connection of new cables and installation of new ammeters apparently reduce the times of power failure while electricity tariff becomes more transparent and convenient.
